Why Policy Leaders and Influencers Matter
Whether
you are in a position to make policy decisions (school board members, city
and county officials, legislators, etc.) — or influence those decisions
in your personal or professional life — you can play an essential role
in supporting the health and safety of youth.
You have the opportunity to open doors — or create barriers — to young people’s access to accurate, balanced sex education and confidential health services.
Strong, supportive policy decisions provide a structure for all Oregonians to put The New 3Rs: Rights, Respect, Responsibility values into action — by demonstrating respect for young people and their ability to act responsibly.
Some outstanding examples of policy leadership in the area of adolescent sexual health include Oregon’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention and Sexual Health Partnership and Governor Ted Kulongoski’s Proclamation for Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month.
Oregon also has important laws on the books that support young people’s right to access information and health services: Oregon Revised Statute 109.640 allows young people to obtain contraception and treatment for sexually transmitted infections without parental notification. Oregon Revised Statute 336.455 requires that sex education programs taught in public schools be comprehensive. Healthcare access and comprehensive information are both essential to supporting youth in acting responsibly.
The New 3Rs promises to help Oregon maintain and advance its leadership in supporting young people in making informed, responsible decisions.
