Why Health Professionals Matter

health care professionalYoung people often have questions and concerns about their sexual health, but don’t know who to turn to for honest and accurate information. In our culture, sexuality is rarely talked about in honest, open terms and may not ever be addressed within the family.

Many people consider their healthcare provider the person they most trust for information and advice about sexuality. For youth in particular, healthcare providers may serve as a neutral source of guidance, information, and reassurance when they aren’t able to ask questions of their parents, teachers and other adults in their lives.

A health professional can also be an essential resource to parents — helping them understand adolescent developmental issues and communicate more openly and knowledgably with their children. Get a list of parent and family resources.
