Why Educators Matter
Whether you provide education in a classroom setting or through a community
organization, you can be an important adult in a young person’s life — trusted
to share complete and accurate information, provide resources and offer referrals
in a non-judgmental, caring and respectful manner.
Unfortunately many young people find their primary sources of sexual messages in the media and in their peer group. Sexuality may be a subject that is rarely, if ever, addressed in a meaningful way in their homes. Your education program may be their one opportunity to gain critical information and skills that can help them be healthy and safe.
You also have the opportunity to play an important role by advocating for comprehensive sexuality education that is appropriate to students’ age, experience, developmental level and cultural background. And you can be a conduit for research and resources that help parents, school districts, policy-makers and the community-at-large understand the value and proven effectiveness of comprehensive sex education.
Educators have an excellent opportunity to support young people in making healthy, responsible decisions. They are vital to transforming the way adults think about young people, and how young people think about themselves.
